On a windy day (and I needed a day off the bike) I headed over to the Volcanoes Day Use Area.  Access is off Exit 149 of I-40.  My maps indicate that bicycles are allowed on the dirt trails of this section of Petroglyph National Monument.  I wanted to be sure before I brought the bike.

I walked the wide trail up to the third shelter at JA Volcano.  As I hiked the trail, I could see other, narrower trails - almost "singletrack".  At the thrird shelter, I was treated with a vista overlooking the Rio Grande River valley and Albuquerque.  When I got back to the car, I was looking forward to another day at Volcano with the bike.

Later during my trip, I was able to bring the Fuel EX7 to Volcanoes.  From the gate, I turned left and tool to trail to between Black Volcano and Vulcan Volcano.  (See Map - map from National Part Service web site) The trail looked less used and not as steep.  The trails surface is cenerally hard pack and/or fine gravel.

As I started climbing the volcano, the trail surface turned to loose rocks - "baby head" rocks.  I am not good at riding thse rocks.  That meant lots of "hike-a-bike" action.
