A Little About Me

GREETINGS!

Since the Spring of 1986 I've lived on an acreage in SW Iowa, not far from Omaha, NE.  I grew up on a farm in Wisconsin so really enjoy living out here in the country.  Most of my family still lives in Wisconsin.

The war in Iraq has had a strong effect on me this year.  Similarities with Vietnam triggered some Post Traumatic Stress.  The continuing lies from the Bush administration and the senseless deaths of our troops are a national disgrace.  I've dedicated a section of my website to my thoughts on Iraq, Vietnam and the "War on Terrorism".

Retired?

March 2002 I retired after over 30 years with Electro-Motive Division of General Motors. In 2001 I spent nearly 200 nights on the road for business. I decided that I had had enough of the rat race and wanted to enjoy life a little more while I could.

The house had been neglected over the past few years with all the traveling, so spent quite a bit of time cleaning and fixing things up. But, like most people, I could use a little extra money.  I listed myself on Monster.com to see what might come along.  I also put out other feelers in the industry.

During 2002 I did a little consulting work on radio remote control locomotives. There wasn't as much work there as originally thought, so I spent most of the winter again working on the house.

In the Spring of 2003, I received a call from Penpower.  They had found my resume on Monster.com and were looking for someone with my skills.  In May I started working part time for them.  However, that has dried up.  They have had no work for me in nearly 10 months.  So, I've spent 2004 working around the house and yard.

A Little History

Here's the short story of Tom Winfield:

I grew up on a farm in SE Wisconsin.  My mother still lives on part of that land.  Graduated from Salem Central High School in 1965.  Off to Case Institute of Technology for a degree in Electrical Engineering.  While at Case, I joined Sigma Chi Fraternity. There was a brief interruption in my education with a stint in the Army, including 13 1/2 months in Viet Nam.

Started working for Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in October 1971.  While working for EMD, I lived in Cleveland, OH, the Seacoast area of New Hampshire.  SW Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook and finally my acreage near Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Over the years I've traveled to all of the 50 United States.  Visited Canada many times and recently Mexico. Been to Australia, Hong Kong, Nigeria, United Arab Emirates, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, U.K. and Switzerland.  There are a few other countries where I spent an overnight or just a plane layover.  As time permits, I'm hoping to get through slides from these trips to include on this website.

I'm a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Military Order of the Cootie.  Life Loyal Sig and member of the Omaha Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter.  Member of American Radio Relay League, SW Iowa Amateur Radio Club, and Ak-Sar-Ben ARC.
