From Durango, it was a drive over to Mesa Verde National Park. The fee station is just off on US Hwy 160. Its about a 15 mile drive on the park drive to Far View Visitor's Center. Make sure that you stop there and talk with a Ranger at the desk. There is where you will get information about the Park and where you sign up for Ranger-led tours. Did a driving tour of the main section of the Park. By then, I had enough so did not drive over to check the Wetherill Mesa area. Had thought about doing one of the payed tours of the "homes". Was told all required very strenuous climbing steps and ladders. Decided would be more fun getting my strenuous workout on my bicycle. Spruce Tree House is the only one you can get close to and into without being one a payed, Ranger-let tour. Long House, Balcony House, and Cliff Palace are accessed only via reserved-space, Ranger-led tours. As this posting, these tours cost $3 per person. Stopped at the restaurant at Spruce Tree House. Talk about a SLOW serving line! Then there was a 1 year old (I estimate) was bawling, screaming. I know that when I was that age, there was no doing that! Otherwise my dad would give me something to cry about (a good spanking). Gave me a headache. When you stop at one of view area along the canyon, you can see "houses" all over. Bring your binoculars and telephoto lens. Don't miss the Cedar Tree Tower and Far View Sites Complex. Both of these are on side roads on the way back to the Vistor's Center. |
